What does heat recovery do in a ventilation system?

HRV exchanges heat between the warm extract air leaving the home and the colder outdoor air being supplied. The two airstreams remain physically separated. The fresh air therefore still comes from outside, but is pre-warmed using heat that would otherwise be lost with the extract air.
