Why can condensation occur even though average humidity seems normal?

Condensation does not start from an average figure for the room, but at a locally cold surface. If the temperature of that spot drops below the dew point of the indoor air, condensation can form there. An average RH in the living room therefore does not automatically mean that every detail of a wall, ceiling or window frame stays dry.
