A fixed high setting can provide enough air at peak moments, but it also keeps running high when a room is empty or air quality is already good. That can cause unnecessary energy use, noise and air movement. Conversely, a fixed low setting can fall short during sleeping, visits, showering or cooking. Demand-based control tries to avoid both of these drawbacks.
